Chasing Pike and Zander with Jerkbaits and large shads.
De Special Force as ultimate weapon!

By Kellen Bon

Fishing for zander and pike often requires a lot of effort and many different skills during summertime, especially on the well-known spots. The bigger, older fish are getting smarter and it takes a little more cunning to get them to slip up.

Two totally different techniques, in combination very effective.

As these big fish start to wise up to anglers the right technique and presentations are now more important than ever. To fish as effectively as possible with jerkbaits and big shads it is important to use the correct hardware, balanced and designed for these styles of fishing. That’s why I choose the HS Special Force series, they are stunning rods perfectly designed for the job.

Fishing Jerkbaits.
When I talk about jerkbaits I am talking about hybrid jerkbaits. These kind of lures require a lot more feeling and touch, it is important you understand and are in perfect contact with the lure. Almost every Hybrid is handmade and therefor have their own unique action. With a hybrid jerkbait the eye attachment is always on top in front of the lure instead of the nose like a glider.

Because the jerkbait is getting pulled with the nose down instead of straight ahead there will be a difference in the action. That makes the action erratic, from the base always left to right. But between the glides some will make a little acceleration up or down, some even have a waggle at the end of a stroke. In short, each lure is unique and behaves differently.

provoke some aggression, let it glide, bang on!

To give a hybrid jerkbait that lethal action isn’t always simple and the rod will make it or break it. That’s why I use the Special Force 220BC, a rod that not only has stunning looks but fishes lures beautifully. The feel on the blank and the contact to the lure is exactly what you need to fish hybrids successfuly.
Specialforce BC 577Px 3
With the Special Force 220bc you can get the best action from your lure!

Tha blank is very sensitive and with the light casting weight you can pull and turn the lure very accurately. Hybrids are fished best when you pull them instead of tapping. A glider like the Rapper you would tap from left to right and need a stiffer blank. Fishing with jerk baits is all about the feeling and that’s why I love to do this, with the right materials it’s totally addictive!

Maximum pleasure!

Medium to big sized Shads
When I fish deeper or when the fish aren’t inclined to nail jerkbaits in the upper water layers then I will switch to the big shads which is I fish diagonally and fitted with jigheads between the 10 to 20gr depending on the depth, wind and current.

Specialforce BC 577Px 5
It’s the same technique when jigging on zander only with a big piece of rubber.

I hold the shad on the bottom, then tap it and wind 2-3 times and let it sink with tight line back to the bottom. The sinking speed depends on the weight of the shad.

Specialforce BC 577Px 6
When you talk about attacks that you will feel into your toes.

According to the conditions I try to fish as light as possible. The takes come 9 out of 10 times during the floating moment. Those are often the takes that will stir you up! With a light jighead this moment will take longer and that will increase the chance on a take. For this type of fishing I use another rod also from the Special Force series but this time the 240 spin rod with a casting weight of 15-60gr. It’s also crucial to have perfect contact with the bait, you need to feel perfectly when you touch the bottom.

Specialforce BC 577Px 7
During sunset I love to make a few last casts…

Besides touching the bottom it is useful if you can determine what the bottom structure actually is. Things like mussels, weed or even perch attacks on the tail or feeling prey fish knocking against the line. With this information you can give the spot more attention. When you have an idea of what is happening below surface you can approach the spot without a fish finder that sends out those shock signals. That signal often ensures that the bigger fish will get in the non-active mode. Especially with current are heavy wind a sensitive blank is a must to be as effective as possible.

Specialforce BC 577Px 8
The Special Force 240 provides you the perfect feeling when fished with medium or big baits.

The Special Force rod series consists of three different lengths, 1,90m – 2,20m and 2,40m. At all lengths they have different casting weights and are available in Baitcasters of spinning models to fit your own preference. The Special Force series is developed by all-time legend Henk Simonsz who put his years of experience together to create this stunning series of rods. These rods contain blanks made of superfast high module carbon, cork handles and only the best Fuji components, In short, a magnificent series of rods. I can’t be without them!
